Design the architecture and schema for tracking inventory reserved during checkout, as a relational source of truth.

Design an inventory-hold system for e-commerce checkout: when a shopper starts checking out, a small number of units are reserved (held) for a few minutes so two shoppers can't both buy the last item. Model this as a relational source of truth - not an in-memory cache - together with the supporting architecture.
